Andy Burnham yesterday outlined how a ??670million-a-year package would help 400,000 people - including people with dementia - to stay in their own homes instead of moving into residential care.
In the second reading debate of the Personal Care at Home bill he described it as a 'significant moment' marking the beginning of a fundamental overhaul of care services in England.
'The promise of free personal care at home for those with the highest needs is a welcome development. However implementing this proposal will be difficult in terms of cost and also guaranteeing the necessary quality of care.
'These measures will not completely fix a social care system that is failing hundreds of thousands of people with dementia. We need a fair and transparent system that provides good care at a fair price for people at every stage of dementia. All political parties need to make this a priority.'
